Unemployment and African Americans – Blacks need Jobs

African Americans consist of over 41.4 million in the United States. They being the second largest minority have employed themselves mostly in management, science, sales, business and arts occupations. It was found that black women are more into these sectors as compared to black men. With all these facts we discovered that still black Americans have 10.1% unemployment rate and if we see the graph below it illustrates the increasing trends in tenure as compared to other ethnic groups:

Moreover Black Americans have a double unemployment rate as compared to whites, though after February 2014 there has been a decrease in unemployment but the better economy hasn’t worked more beneficially for the blacks. Whenever the progress over economy takes place this minority has the least progress and it works against them briskly whenever the recession starts. In both the sides they are being affected the most. Since we were looking to read details we find some reasons for this cause:

Basically black’s working force employ themselves in lower-wage industries which have the most turnover rates. The degree of uncertainty is more which keeps many blacks out of employment for several months or years. Though US government has made discrimination illegal but still blacks find it hard to completely dismiss that race has no effect on their employment. They possess the same potential as compared to other races but still simple things like their name and complex made them hold back. Moreover the 9/11 incidents made a huge difference as many black Americans were thought to be the conspiring hand, many movedand looked for shelter. A lot looked for new employment and many had lost their trust over the white community. It was quite touching to know that black men age between 40-50 don’t think of having retirement and making new house or even buying a comfortable ride, what they focus on is to survive and remain intact to the present job.

A lot of Black People are looking for new employment and many had lost their trust over the white community. It was quite touching to know that black men age between 40-50 don’t think of having retirement or even buying a comfortable ride, what they focus on is to survive and remain intact to the present job. As the above graphs represent that during the season of 2014 the rate of unemployment stayed above 10% while whites were way below them. If we talk about the recent studies held we can see the graphs of wages have drop for African Americans (Black Americans) by 45 cents and as compared to whites and other ethnic groups there was an increase of 48 cents in wages in last fifteen years.

Last of the facts I want to share is that the jobs did increase over the past five years, there was an increase in the job market for black and figure touched to 2.3 million and if we see the black employment rate it went from 52 percent to 54 percent, as compared to whites their job market increased about 3.8 million. They got an increase of 3.4 percent. So we can interpret that jobs did increase and so does the ratio but not as compared to the whites there still lays a gap that needs to be covered up. It can only happen with time and spirit which human being contains. Lastly a quote that which makes the equality which humans should have:

“If we cannot now end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity”
(John F. Kennedy)

Minority Employment – Needs Work

Everyone needs a job to earn their bread and butter. Young graduates especially minorities usually need to make money to get into their favorite university, but some minority people are left behind in the race for employment just because they are not white. Mostly students with a minority background are financially not capable of paying the hefty tuition fee, which the universities demand.

THE RACIAL DISCRIMINATION HITS THE MINORITY EMPLOYMENT SECTOR

According to the research, it was revealed that within a year, 66% of white graduates found work, but 56.3% blacks, Asians, and other minority students remain unemployed. Moreover, according to The National Statistic Figures, more than half of the Blacks who were 16-24 years old were unemployed. Unfortunately, till 2015, the minority unemployment rate increased by 27.1%. The Oxbridge colleges have very low acceptance rate for black students. The discrimination between the student races can further be picturized from the statement of the MP, David Lammy, who says, “The doors of universities are difficult to get through if you are not white.”

THE LIFE OF A MINORITY IS A BIG STRUGGLE

The problems for minorities are not just restricted to the fee expenditures and acceptance, even after graduating the minorities suffers a lot. They are considered useless and rejected by employers who refuse them because they are black or have foreign sounding names, even without testing their skills. In other words, a black person with no criminal record is treated as same as a white person with a criminal record. Even when it comes to socializing, the minorities, especially blacks are ignored. As a result, some minorities leave the USA and go to some other countries where they are open heartedly acceptable and respected.

AN ALL-TIME RECESSION FOR BLACKS

In the USA, the recession may hit companies for a time, but there is a permanent recession for you if you are Black. After the 9/11 terrorist attack in 2001, many people who were in the minority were forced to leave their jobs. Even the biggest food chain, Mc Donalds treated some black employees unfairly. Because they were a minority? In 2014, Mc Donald’s franchise in Virginia fired ten employees by giving the excuse that ” there are too many black people.” Those employees were called ‘ghetto’, and ‘ratchet’ but  McDonald’s did nothing to help them, and their minority employment terminated by getting fired because, as per Mc Donald’s lame excuse, they did not fit the profile.

Some people, even after being bullied because of their color and name did not let the odds stop them. The biggest example in front of us is the president of the USA, Mr. Barak Husein Obama, who is an African American. He is black but still he is the president. It does somehow reflect that there are some gates, which can open ways to reduce the gaps between the whites and blacks. The effort is to be done so that people may change their views and accept the blacks and other minorities who are the part of our society. Else these minorities would be left behind in every sphere of life.

The Unemployment Insurgent Program

The biggest problem that arises in the lives of workers is unemployment. There is a lack of jobs and not enough work for the youth. A person who does not have a job but actively seeks work to do is known as an unemployed person. Youth unemployment rates are historically high than the adult rates in every country in the world.

There are so many reasons behind unemployment in countries around the globe. The first reason that we come up with is the quality of education. Most of the unemployed people are those who have primary or less education. Although, high education does not always guarantee a good job but it does help in landing a suitable job most of the time! Second is, that companies or offices hire the young workers in temporary forms of work like internships and short-term contracts and when a firm downsizes, it fires these workers.

The unemployed people face so many consequences in their life. What can be more unfair, that they are willing to do work but are not getting any? Unemployment has many direct and indirect impacts on lives of young people and their families. Due to unemployment, many people are becoming victims of depression and anxiety. Crime rate also increases due to unemployment because their needs force them into doing wrong things to earn money.

Unemployment also affects the economic growth of the country as so many people are not working which causes non-productivity. The young people who are at the age of 18- 26 seriously consider migrating to other places in order to find work. As it is not easy to spend life without working and earning because nothing comes in free. Money is such an important part of life as there are so many desires that a person wants to fulfill and without money it is not possible and without a job or work earning money is also not possible.

The rate of unemployment in the United States has increased in last five years. Youth unemployment rate has increased 10 percent more. For solving the problem of unemployed workers, the country provides them with some benefits. These are known as Unemployment Insurance Benefits.

Unemployment insurance is also known as unemployment benefits or unemployment compensation. It is a form of social welfare payments made by the state or other authorized bodies to unemployed people.

In 1932, unemployment insurance was launched in Wisconsin in the United States. The federal government of the United States effectively promoted the individual states to adopt unemployment insurance programs through the Social Security Act of 1935.

Unemployment insurance is organized as a federal-state system and it provides basic income support for unemployed workers rather than retirees. The program is designed to provide limited income replacement to regularly employed members of the labor force who become involuntarily unemployed. It means people who become jobless for a reason other than misconduct. Benefits are paid weekly to workers who are qualified as a matter of right, according to benefits schedules or formulas specified in the law. Benefits eligibility and amounts are related to previous contributions by or on behalf of the worker.

WHO SHOULD AVAIL THIS?

In order to receive benefits payments, a person must meet the unemployment insurance (UI) eligibility requirement. When an unemployment insurance claim request is filed and a certification is submitted all the eligibility requirements must be fulfilled before benefits can be paid by the Employment Development Department (EDD).

An individual who files for unemployment insurance benefits must meet the following eligibility requirements before benefits can be paid. The  individual must:

  • Have worked for at least one quarter in the previous year.
  • Be laid off by an employer.
  • Be unemployed through no misconduct.
  • Be physically able to work.
  • Be available for work.
  • Be ready and willing to immediately accept work.
  • Be actively looking for work.
  • Be approved for training before training benefits can be paid.

Workers who meet these eligibility conditions may still be denied unemployment insurance benefits if they are found to be responsible for their own unemployment. If the worker is receiving certain types of income such as pension, back pay, or workers’ compensation for temporary partial disability, the benefits may be reduced. Unemployment benefits are subject to Federal income taxes.

An individual must certify for benefits by submitting a certification online, over the phone, or by mail. The EDD will schedule a phone interview if the information on the certification shows that the individual did not meet the eligibility requirements. Benefits may be reduced or denied it depends on the information that is obtained from the individual.

BENEFITS OF UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE

The unemployed workers in the United States who are eligible to claim the benefits are given between 40-50 % amounts of their previous pay. These benefits are paid by the state government, the state funds it in large part and by the federal payroll taxes imposed on employers, to the workers who become unemployed without any misconduct of their own. The benefits are based on the quarterly earnings of an individual. The time period and value of an unemployed benefit are determined through the previous amount of earnings and number of quarters a person had worked. Although the maximum time limit of an individual to receive this benefit is 26 weeks.

These benefits are good for unemployed persons and give them support to some extent. And it somewhat helps them.

CONCLUSION

For permanent and temporary workers more balanced employment protection is needed. The country should maintain the level of education. There should be a high and equal level of education in reasonable fee for every individual of the country so that maximum persons could meet the criteria of available jobs. The country should take measures and try to create opportunities for the unemployed population.

Although, Unemployment Insurance scheme is very beneficial and useful for the unemployed workers. The procedure to file a claim is also not difficult and lengthy but yes there are rules and conditions applied. The person should be able to work, willing to work, and should not be responsible for his own unemployment. Otherwise, the individual’s request to claim the benefit will be denied.
